ประวัติ

เพลงสี่เกลอ เดิมเป็นเพลงไทยในอัตรา 2 ชั้น สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ เจ้าฟ้าบริพัตรสุขุมพันธุ์ กรมพระนครสวรรค์วรพินิต ทรงพระนิพนธ์ขยายเป็น 3 ชั้น แล้วตัดลงเป็นชั้นเดียว จนครบเป็นเพลงเถา เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2465 เมื่อครั้งทรงย้ายจากกองทัพเรือมาดำรงตำแหน่งเสนาธิการทหารบก จึงโปรดให้วงดุริยางค์ทหารหมาดเล็กใช้บรรเลง โดยทรงเขียนเป็นโน๊ตสากลด้วยลายพระหัตถ์ เป็นเพลงเสียงประสานและแทรกภาษาต่างๆไว้ 4 แนว จึงเรียกว่า เพลงสี่เกลอ กล่าวกันว่าเป็นเพลงที่แสดงถึงฝีพระหัตถ์ว่าทรงพระปรีชาสามารถในการแต่งเพลงนี้จริงๆ นักดนตรีทั้งหลายยกย่องเพลงนี้ว่าเป็นเพลงชั้นเยี่ยม เพราะทางดนตรีมิได้ยากแต่พียงอย่างเดียว ยังยาวมากอีกด้วย โดยมุ่งพระทัยที่จะประทานให้เป็นเพลงแตรวงจที่ฟังได้ทั้งไทยทั้งฝรั่งโดยไม่รู้สึกเบื่อ แม้บทร้องจะสั้นแต่ทางดนตรีสลับซับซ้อนยืดยาวมาก จนได้ชื่อว่าเป็นเพลงเถาที่ยาวที่สุดของวงการดนตรีไทย

See Glur was originally a ‘song chan’ song. HRH Prince Paribatra had enlarged it to ‘sam chan’ and the reduced to a ‘chan deo’ to complete a ‘tao’ piece in 1922 when he was a Chief of Staff, with notated manuscript in his own handwriting for the Royal Page brass band to perform. He also added lyrics for the four-part vocals (soprano-alto-tenor-bass) in four languages, naming the song See Glur (The Four Friends). This song is not only one of his most difficult pieces but also the longest tao in Thailand. Though the lyrics consists of just a few lines, the instrumental parts are very complexed and long.

The lyrics was an adaptation of His Majesty King Rama II’s I-nao.
