Ellis “Buz” Butler made the earliest-recorded version of the huge late-1940s hit (it was especially successful for Frankie Laine that year https://youtu.be/BL6RIfj-lzU ). Though it has been reported that Butler had first recorded "Mule Train" in 1947, this Decca release from an October 1949 session is the earliest commercially-issued version by him that I have seen documented. F Laine, B Crosby, T E Ford, V Monroe, and G MacRae all recorded competing versions within three weeks after the Butler session.

The 78rpm single was issued on Decca 46194 - Mule Train (Johnny Lange-Hy Heath-Fred Glickman) by Buz Butler, recorded in Los Angeles October 7, 1949 (per the DAHR)
