Description

This song has an interesting legacy. It was written in 1947 by Sam Coslow, Irving Taylor and pianist Ken Lane (who would eventually become Dean Martin's accompanist). The first notable recorded version was by Frank Sinatra the year it was written, accompanied by Axel Stordahl's Orchestra. Martin had performed the song in 1948 on the NBC radio program he shared with then-partner, Jerry Lewis. During the DREAM WITH DEAN recording sessions, there was some studio time left, and Ken Lane suggested that Dean do a run-through of his old composition. Dean obliged, and the recording was chosen for inclusion on the album. For Dean's next album, arranger Ernie Freeman worked up the charts for full orchestra and chorus. That recording, which some (including myself) feel is overproduced (by Jimmy Bowen), knocked The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" out of the #1 slot on the Billboard pop chart. Here, over 50 years later, is the prior recording, which IMHO, has held up better than the "hit" version.
