I first came across this song on a 1957 LP called Belafonte Sings of the Carribbean. It never left me. It was attributed to Belafonte/Burgess, Lord Burgess being the great Brooklyn Calypsonian who wrote many of the lyrics for the early Harry Belafonte records.They rendered the song in English but it originated in 1920, a patriotic song by Othello Bayard called Souvenir d' Haiti. It's still sung today. Here, it's performed by French chansonnier Georges Moustaki in 1999. It sings of a tropical paradise, Haiti before all its many problems, devastating earthquake, grinding poverty, AIDS, cholera, political turmoil and lately, trashing by Trump.
