World premiere of In Mortal Key by Stephanie Martin * (b. 1962)
Jennifer Jones, violin
Stephanie Martin is associate professor of music at York University, director of Schola Magdalena women’s ensemble, conductor emeritus of Pax Christi Chorale, and former director of music at Toronto’s historic church of Saint Mary Magdalene. “In Mortal Key” is her first commission for the Halifax Camerata Singers. The text is by Solomon ibn Gabirol, an 11th century Andalusian poet and Jewish philosopher.
At dawn I seek you, refuge, rock sublime.
My morning prayers I offer and those at evening time.
I tremble in your awesome presence, contrite,
for my deepest secrets lie stripped before your sight.
My tongue, what can it say? My heart, what can it do?
What is my strength? What is my spirit too?
Should music be sweet to you in mortal key,
Your praises will I sing as long as breath’s in me.
Live Performance: St. Andrew's United Church, November 6, 2021.

Producer: Jeremy VanSlyke
