In 1963, a 14-year-old Ozzy Osbourne was walking through the streets of Aston, England, with a transistor radio pressed to his ear when he heard a song that would change everything: “She Loves You” by The Beatles. That moment didn’t just inspire a teenager — it set the course for one of the most influential careers in rock history.
Ozzy has often cited The Beatles as the reason he got into music. Their sound lit a fire in him that led, just a few years later, to an ad he placed in a local music shop seeking bandmates. That ad connected him with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. Together, they formed a band called Earth, playing blues-inspired rock.
But after realizing another group in the area was already using the name Earth, the band began searching for a new identity. That’s when inspiration struck — literally from across the street. Geezer Butler saw a cinema marquee advertising the 1963 horror film Black Sabbath, and suggested the band lean into darker, heavier music inspired by the mood of horror films.
With that, Black Sabbath was born — and heavy metal would never be the same.
