Oasis - Champagne Supernova (Fixed SACD Downmix)

This is a fixed version of “Champagne Supernova” from the 5.1 surround sound SACD (Super Audio CD) mix of “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” by Oasis! I want to make clear that this is not my mix, per se, but my attempt at fixing what I believe to be what the mixing engineers intended. Thus, 92% or so of the credit for this mix goes to the mixing engineer, Neil Dorfsman, as well as the assistant mixing engineer, David Swope. I say it’s a “fixed” version of the surround sound mix because I believe there were unintended errors in the final mix. I have attempted to fix these errors and fold the 5.1 mix down to stereo for you all to hear! Here are the steps I took in this track:
- Do not invert the entire 3rd channel; only invert everything after 28 seconds
- Lower channel 3 by 6dB
- Amplify entire track by an additional 3dB.
- Lower the 5th and 6th channels by 3dB
- After the previous step, make channels 5 and 6 into a stereo track and duplicate it, and invert this duplication. Generate silence in this duplication for everything before 4:27.862 and after 5:37.309, create a fade-in beginning 4:27.862 and ending 4:29.218, and create a fade-out beginning 5:34.770 and ending 5:37.309. Make channels 1 and 2 into a stereo track and fold the previously stated duplication into it. The result will be your new channel 1 and 2.
- Since the final huge breakdown appears to be missing Liam’s vocals, I decided to fly them in from the Rock Band 4 multitracks. Shift the end of the vocal track to 7:06.343, generate silence for everything before 4:58.405 and after the guitar breakdown. Lower this vocal thingy by 6dB and fold it into the first two channels. (Keep in mind that this number can change depending on how loud the mix is to begin with. This version I currently have here is currently 0.7dB quieter compared to the original mix.)
Downmixing to stereo was completed through Audacity’s “Mix” function in its Track tab. Before downmixing, channels 1 and 2 are made into a single stereo track, and channels 5 and 6 are made into a single stereo track, and the 3rd and 4th channels are lowered by 3dB (as they are mono channels). (Downmixing through other programs may lower the 3rd (center) channel, 4th (LFE) channel, and 5th and 6th (back) channels differently, so keep that in mind.)
