Description

"You're the One" was recorded in spring 1965 by The Vogues at Gateway Studios in Pittsburgh. It was released in September 1965 on Co&Ce Records in the US and on London Records in the UK and Germany. It peaked at #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart as well as in New Zealand and in Canada. Enjoy my DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] conversion of this mid-60’s hit.

Written by Petula Clark and Tony Hatch

"You're the One" was the first track to be credited to the Vogues although the group had previously recorded as the Val-Aires. Pittsburgh-based record producer Nick Cenci had already cut "You're the One" with a local band called the Racket Squad. After hearing the Val-Aires audition tape, Cenci decided that that group's lead singer Bill Burkette could sing "You're the One" more effectively than Racket Squad vocalist Sonny DiNunzio. Accordingly, DiNunzio's vocals were erased from the master, so that Bill Burkette could record a fresh vocal over the instrumentation played by the Racket Squad's members.
Petula Clark's own version entered the UK Singles Chart in November 1965 and peaked at #23. According to Chuck Blasco of the Vogues, Clark's US label: Warner Bros., had also intended to issue Clark's version as a single to vie with the Vogues' version in the US, but Petula vetoed the idea saying: "Let the boys have the hit". The Vogues' UK release on London Records peaked at #55. It didn’t generate enough interest to share the UK charts with Petula’s version.

The Vogues are an American vocal rock and roll group from Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The original lineup consisted of Bill Burkette (lead baritone), Don Miller (baritone), Hugh Geyer (first tenor), and Chuck Blasko (second tenor). They are best known for their chart-topping singles "You're the One", "Five O'Clock World", "Magic Town", and "Turn Around, Look at Me".

About the original MONO mix:
The mono track was from a 60’s compilation CD. It was a fairly good 1991 digital transfer. The original recording was fairly sterile, having been recorded on 1st generation transistorized solid-state equipment of that era. I’ll do my best to add some warmth to my stereo mix!

About my DES STEREO mix:
On the vocals, I added a nice stereo reverb to add continuity to the stereo image. After I mixed it in stereo, that abrupt punch-in of the background vocals in the middle verse stood out like a sore thumb! I left it in. I panned the rhythm & lead guitars Left and made them with opposing reverb in the Right. I panned the Drums Right with apposing reverb into the Left. I left the bass unaltered and centered.

Technical Information:
I used iZotope RX-8 to isolate the Vocals, Guitars, Drums and Bass into 4 separate tracks. Adobe Audition 2020 was used for Dynamic Range recovery, Reverb, Delay, EQ, and final mixdown. Sonic Studio’s Amarra Luxe Sound Processor was used for post EQ and upsampling. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
